Wola Nani in Context

“AIDS today in Africa is claiming more lives than the sum total of all wars, famines, floods and ravages of diseases such as malaria. It is devastating families and communities, depleting health care resources and robbing schools of both students and teachers ” – Nelson Mandela, 13th International Aids Conference, 2000.

Behind the statistics
Statistics, however, hide the real anguish and suffering of those affected. They fail to tell of the grief, despair and isolation of the mother who has lost her child, the brother who is nursing his dying sister, the lover deserted by her partner and the families who face the overwhelming reality of living and coping with HIV/AIDS. With each new infection, another home becomes implicated in the growing crisis. Children die in their mother’s arms, babies and young children are orphaned and spouses are abused or abandoned.
